Pathology Assistant

Shift: 5 X 8s, 40 hours/week

Important Requirements

• ASCP certified or ASCP exam ready, with certification required prior to start date.
• Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program required.

Position Summary

The Pathology Assistant works under the direct or indirect supervision of a Pathologist to assist with surgical specimen and frozen section dissections, accurate gross description dictation, quality assurance and quality control activities, equipment maintenance, and other department operations supporting accurate diagnostic results and patient care.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate patient identification on specimens processed for microscopic examination.
• Perform surgical specimen dissection from simple to complex specimens.
• Provide quality material for routine histology and specialized testing.
• Obtain Pathologist input for gross specimen analysis when appropriate.
• Perform frozen sections and maintain cryostats.
• Dictate complete and accurate gross descriptions.
• Communicate with Pathologists and providers to support timely and accurate result reporting.
• Maintain equipment, supplies, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology gross cutting area and morgue.
• Dispose of tissues and reagents according to standard operating procedures.
• Perform, interpret, and report validated tests according to standard operating procedures.
• Apply knowledge of clinical disease presentations and technical testing elements to support timely and accurate diagnostic results.
• Recognize discrepant test results and take appropriate corrective action.
• Perform and document quality control and routine preventive maintenance.
• Maintain the gross bench procedure manual and review CAP compliance.
• Participate in problem solving, quality assurance, and quality control monitoring.
• Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists' Assistant program.

Required Certifications

• Pathologists' Assistant - Certified (ASCP), required prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior grossing experience.

Schedule

• 5 8-hour shifts.
• 40 hours per week.
